The masseter muscle is one of four chewing muscles. It extends from the zygomatic arch (cheek bone) to the edge of the lower jaw. In some people this muscle is constitutionally so large that it can give the appearance of a very wide lower jaw and, as a result, a "square" face.
A large masseter muscle
A very large amount of muscle activity causes the muscle to increase in size. In some people, the masseter muscle can be very pronounced as a result of the chewing action, giving the face an angular appearance. Treatment can reduce the muscle mass without impairing the chewing function.
How does masseter treatment work?
Like any muscle, the masseter muscle becomes smaller naturally if it is used less. This can be achieved by treating the chewing muscle with botulinum. This interrupts the nerve impulses that control muscle activity, reducing the activity of the chewing muscle. This does not impair the functionality of the muscle.
How soon after treatment can I resume my everyday activities?
The treatment lasts 30 minutes in total (consultation, information, preparation, and administration of treatment) and you can then resume your usual activities with no restrictions on your social life. Any needle-entry points that remain visible for a short time can easily be hidden with make-up.
What do I need to be aware of after treatment with botulinum toxin?
You should AVOID the following activities for 24 hours after treatment with botulinum toxin:
Visits to a sauna or Turkish bath
Excessive sports activity
Extreme positions held for a long time (head stands, power yoga)
Tatjana is performing exactly the same muscle action in both photos. She is looking angry and drawing her eyebrows together. However, in the "after" photo the bothersome expression lines have been substantially reduced by the botulinum toxin treatment. Some of the mobility of the forehead has been retained, allowing her facial expressions to remain natural and not appear mask-like.

Tatjana looks younger than her years. But she is bothered by the dark rings under her eyes and would like to do something about them. Read Tatjana’s Customer Journey to see how we managed this.
Botulinum has been used in various fields of medicine since the 1980s. This biological protein is mainly used as a medication to treat unwanted expression lines and frown wrinkles, as well as excessive sweating under the arms.
