Hyaluronic acid, external application

Because of its favourable properties, hyaluronic acid (hyaluronan) is frequently used in cosmetics. Hyaluronan is well suited for external use because it forms an elastic gel when combined with water. This gel can be applied to the skin, where it forms a transparent film that binds water but still stays permeable to air. The gel prevents evaporation of water from the cells, thus helping to stop the skin from drying out. However, hyaluronan cannot penetrate into or under the skin just by applying it to the surface. This means that injection of hyaluronan is essential for the effective treatment of wrinkles, creases or volume defects.
